In recent years, American television programs have topped the most popular TV show in Chinese young people's world. There is a group of people who know English or want to learn English by the series. Meanwhile, when the American series became popularity, the public noticed that more and more Chinese language are put into the programs.
Classical Chinese elements
If you are a big fan of American TV shows, you could see many Chinese words like "Chinese Kung-fu". Besides, as more and more Chinese are attracted by American shows, many fresh Chinese elements have been put into them. "The Big Bang Theory", which is maybe the most popular one in China, has a canned program every Wednesday: having Chinese take-out from a Sichuan restaurant downstairs.
People love learning Chinese
Besides the elements, more actors started to learn Chinese and show their Chinese, which make Chinese netizens excited as almost all Chinese people are trying hard to learn English. Many senior fans could remember that when Sheldon in The Big Bang Theory learning Chinese with his friends, the pronunciation of Chinese "Ai ya! Xia Si Wo Le (you scared me!)" was praised by Chinese netizens as "very local!"
What's more, Modern Family, American Horror Story and more and more other programs have put Chinese language in.
A college student, Zhang Mingyao, who loves Desperate Housewives, said when American people started to learn Chinese means Chinese is important. As a Chinese, I am happy. The Chinese language has its unique attraction."
Behind the Chinese language craze
Against the background of a social context, adding Chinese elements to TV series is a start that local American people became interested in the country across the Pacific. What's more, domestic public opinion in China is playing a key role in promoting American series' popularity in China. The China market is a new challenge for the scriptwriters and directors of the American TV series.
Guo Zhien from Beijing Language and Culture University believed that the Chinese elements in the American TV series are a kind of alien culture which could meet the demand of freshness. It is a process of bilateral interaction and the TV programs could both meet the demand of viewers and let people know more about Chinese culture.
In recent years, as Chinese language becomes popular globally, Confucius Institutes have opened classes in countries all around the world. Language is the carrier of culture and every language has its culture and values. When people study Chinese, the culture and values of Chinese language will be taught to learners.
